Wat Arun is a complex of religious buildings that serve as temple Buddhist ( wat ) in Bangkok in Thailand. The temple is located in the district of Bangkok Yai , in the populous district of Thonburi on the right bank of the river Chao Phraya . The full name of the temple is Wat Arunratchawararam Ratchaworamahavihara. It is also called the Temple of ‘dawn for the wonderful color effects that give early morning. The most notable is the construction of the Wat Arun storied central spire ( Prang ), built in Khmer style brick with stucco and adorned with thousands of pieces of multicolored Chinese porcelain.
On each of the four sides of the Prang is a very steep staircase leading to two terraces, all in the first terrace of the tower there are a number of protective deities representing caryatids Yaksas . Above them are scenes of the life of Buddha interspersed with niches containing statues of Kinnaras (Hindu and Buddhist mythology creatures of half man and half bird). The caryatids of the second terrace are monkeys in the epic Siamese Ramakien , which in turn bring other Kinnaras. All ‘last level, above the second terrace are four niches containing statues of the warrior god Hindu Indra , who rides the mythological three-headed elephant Erawan.
